Chlamydia Symptoms

Chlamydia symptoms

Chlamydia is one of the most common STIs in the Netherlands. However, many people do not notice that they are infected. This is because a chlamydia infection often causes few or no symptoms at all. As a result, the bacterium can remain unnoticed and be passed on to sexual partners.

When symptoms do occur, they usually appear within a few weeks of infection. The symptoms vary per person and depend on where the infection is located. For example, men and women can experience different symptoms and chlamydia can also occur in the throat or anus.

Why does chlamydia often cause no symptoms?

The bacterium that causes chlamydia can develop in the body without directly causing obvious symptoms. As a result, many people do not know that they are infected. However, the absence of symptoms does not mean that the infection cannot have consequences.

An untreated chlamydia infection can remain present for months. In some cases, this can lead to inflammation or other health problems. Therefore, it is important not to rely solely on symptoms if you think you may have been at risk.

Common symptoms of chlamydia

Although the symptoms can vary greatly, certain symptoms are relatively common with a chlamydia infection.

  • Pain or a burning sensation during urination
  • Discharge from the penis
  • More vaginal discharge than usual
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Pain or swelling of a testicle
  • Itching or irritation around the anus

Not everyone experiences these symptoms. Many people experience only one symptom or notice nothing at all from the infection.

Symptoms of chlamydia in women

In women, the infection is often located in the cervix. The symptoms can be subtle and are therefore not always directly linked to an STI.

Common symptoms in women include:

  • Increased or abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Pain or a burning sensation during urination
  • Pain low in the abdomen
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Bleeding after sex
  • Pain during intercourse

However, a large proportion of women with chlamydia notice nothing at all from the infection. This is precisely why regular testing is recommended when there has been unprotected sexual contact.

Symptoms of chlamydia in men

In men, chlamydia often causes inflammation of the urethra. The symptoms are sometimes clearly present, but men can also be infected without symptoms.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Discharge from the penis
  • A burning sensation during urination
  • Irritation or itching in the urethra
  • Pain or a heavy feeling in the scrotum
  • Swelling of a testicle or epididymis

The discharge from the penis can be clear, white, or watery. Not every man with chlamydia gets this symptom.

Chlamydia in the throat

Chlamydia can also be transmitted through oral sex. In that case, the bacterium can settle in the throat.

Most people with throat chlamydia have no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they often resemble a common sore throat.

  • Sore throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • An irritated throat

Because these symptoms can have many causes, an infection in the throat is often not immediately recognized.

Chlamydia in the anus

After anal sexual contact, chlamydia can also occur in the anus. As with other forms of chlamydia, this does not always cause symptoms.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Itching around the anus
  • Pain during or after bowel movements
  • Mucus discharge
  • Bleeding
  • A burning or irritated sensation

If these symptoms occur, it is wise to get tested so that a possible infection can be treated quickly.

How quickly do chlamydia symptoms appear?

The period between infection and the onset of symptoms is called the incubation period. For chlamydia, this is usually between one and three weeks. However, this can vary per person.

Some people develop symptoms within a few days, while others experience no symptoms for months. Therefore, it is not possible to determine whether you have been infected based on symptoms alone.

Can you have chlamydia without symptoms?

Yes. This even occurs regularly. Many infections are only discovered after a partner tests positive or during a preventative STI check.

Even if you have no symptoms, you can transmit the bacterium to others. The absence of symptoms does not automatically mean that there is no infection present.

When is a chlamydia test advisable?

A test is recommended when:

  • You have had unprotected sex
  • A sexual partner has tested positive for chlamydia
  • You have symptoms that may indicate an STI
  • You have had multiple sexual partners
  • You want certainty after risky sexual contact

Timely testing can help detect an infection early and prevent further spread.

What happens if chlamydia is not treated?

An untreated chlamydia infection can lead to complications. The chance of this increases the longer the infection remains present.

In women, chlamydia can lead to inflammation of the fallopian tubes or the small pelvis, among other things. In some cases, this can affect fertility.

In men, an untreated infection can cause inflammation of the epididymis. This is often accompanied by pain and swelling of the testicles.

Fortunately, chlamydia is usually easily treatable when the infection is diagnosed in time.

Frequently asked questions about chlamydia symptoms

What are the first symptoms of chlamydia?

The first symptoms are often pain during urination, discharge from the penis or vagina, and mild lower abdominal pain. However, many people experience no symptoms at all.

How do you recognize chlamydia?

That is not always possible based on symptoms alone. A test is the only way to determine with certainty whether you are infected.

Can symptoms disappear on their own?

Some symptoms may lessen, but that does not mean the infection has disappeared. Without treatment, the bacterium can remain present.

Do you always have pain with chlamydia?

No. Many people with chlamydia experience no pain and notice nothing of the infection.

Can you have chlamydia for years without knowing it?

An infection can remain unnoticed for a long time because symptoms are often absent. Therefore, testing is important if you think you may have been at risk.
