The severity of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) varies. For example, chlamydia can eventually cause infertility, while syphilis can even lead to blindness or paralysis.

A practical example: an acquaintance of ours suffered from blocked fallopian tubes. This condition, also known as salpingitis or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), can have serious consequences. In many cases, flushing of the fallopian tubes is necessary. In the best case, this works and the blockage is resolved. In the worst case, it fails and leads to infertility. This means that you cannot conceive naturally, which can lead to strain on your relationship, insecurity, and stress. Often the question arises: why can't we get pregnant? After many investigations, it eventually becomes clear that the cause was an STI, in this case chlamydia.

Due to shame or personal reasons, someone may not dare to visit their GP for an STI test. Normally, the GGD (Municipal Health Service) is an alternative, but from 2025 it will become more difficult to get tested at the GGD.
