HPV in women

HPV in Women

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. Almost every sexually active woman will come into contact with the virus at some point. Usually, the immune system clears HPV on its own without causing any symptoms.

However, some types of HPV can persist for a long time. This can lead to abnormalities in the cervix. Therefore, smear tests and the cervical cancer screening program play an important role in the early detection of abnormalities.

What is HPV?

HPV is a collective name for over 200 different types of viruses. Some of these are transmitted during sexual contact.

There are low-risk types that can cause genital warts and high-risk types that can lead to cell abnormalities in the long term.

How do women get HPV?

HPV is transmitted through skin-to-skin and mucous membrane contact during sexual activity.

Infection can occur during:

  • Vaginal sex.
  • Anal sex.
  • Oral sex.
  • Intimate skin-to-skin contact.

A condom reduces the risk of infection but does not completely prevent it.

Symptoms of HPV in women

Most women do not notice an HPV infection.

When symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Genital warts.
  • Abnormal smear test results.
  • Cell abnormalities only discovered during medical examination.

High-risk types of HPV usually do not cause immediate symptoms.

HPV and the smear test

In women, an HPV infection can be detected during a smear test or an HPV test.

When high-risk HPV is found, the laboratory also assesses whether abnormal cells are present. Based on this, it is determined whether further investigation is needed.

What happens with a positive HPV test?

A positive result does not mean you have cancer.

In many cases, the body clears the virus on its own. Sometimes extra check-ups or further investigations are needed to monitor any cell changes closely.

How is HPV treated?

There is no medicine that removes HPV from the body.

When HPV causes genital warts, these can be treated. For abnormal cells, a gynecologist determines whether treatment is necessary.

HPV and cervical cancer

A long-term infection with a high-risk type of HPV can increase the risk of cervical cancer.

Precisely for this reason, participation in the screening program is important. By detecting any abnormalities early, they can often be treated before cancer develops.

Can you prevent HPV?

The chance of infection can be reduced by practicing safe sex and by vaccination against HPV.

The HPV vaccination protects against the main types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer and genital warts.

Frequently asked questions about HPV in women

Do women always experience symptoms from HPV?

No. Most women do not notice an infection.

Does a positive HPV test mean I have cancer?

No. A positive test only means that HPV has been detected. Usually, the virus disappears on its own.

Why is a smear test important?

A smear test can detect HPV and any cell abnormalities early.

Can HPV disappear on its own?

Yes. In most women, the immune system clears the virus on its own.

Does a condom fully protect against HPV?

No. The risk is reduced, but complete protection is not possible.

Regular check-ups provide reassurance

An HPV infection is usually harmless and often disappears on its own. Nevertheless, it is important not to skip invitations for the screening program and to consult a doctor if you notice genital warts or other changes. By detecting abnormalities early, serious health problems can often be prevented.
